In this course, care providers will explore strategies to meaningfully connect and support a person living with dementia and their family.
Course Description
In this course, five individuals share their personal experience about living with dementia. Care providers will explore evidence-informed, person-centred approaches to support a person living with dementia, as well as their care partners and family.
This course is designed for unregulated care providers (personal support workers, healthcare aides, health care assistants, continuing care assistants, home health aides, home support workers, resident aides, home care assistants, personal attendants, nursing assistants) across Canada. The course content incorporates support for unregulated care providers supporting people living in long-term care homes, retirement living, and home and community settings.
Course Outline
Elijah’s Story
Elijah lives on a farm in Valleyview, Alberta. You will explore ways to learn about a person’s unique story to better understand the meaning behind someone’s actions.
Lily’s Story
Lily lives in a long-term care home in Kapuskasing, northern Ontario. You will explore ways to prevent, identify and respond to situations of immediate concern for people living with dementia in collaboration with the care team.
Albert’s Story
Albert lives in a long-term care home in Selkirk, Manitoba. You will learn the importance of exploring each person’s unique story and discuss strategies to support their day-to-day experiences.
Nagamo’s Story
Nagamo lives on the land of Bearskin Lake First Nation in Kenora. You will explore ways to support a person and family’s end of life journey.
Sophie’s Story
Sophie lives in her family home in Shelburne, Nova Scotia. You will explore changes that can occur over time for a person living with dementia and identify how the care team can best support the person and family.
